Biofuels at a Glance

By-product:
Biofuels are by-products of forestry and the forest industry. They are made from branches and tops ("forest residues") that cannot be used as timber products, as well as by-products such as bark, sawdust, wood chips, and shavings from sawmills. Biofuels make it possible to utilize more of the harvested tree.

Biofuels:
Biofuels are a form of renewable energy derived from biomass, such as plants and plant-based materials.

Renewable:
Biofuels and bioenergy are continuously replenished, unlike fossil fuels such as oil and coal.

Availability:
Many countries have easier access to biofuels than to fossil fuels. There is also potential to increase the supply of biofuels, for example by recovering more forest residues (branches and tops) during harvesting operations.

A Stable Foundation for Industrial Energy Supply:

For many companies, energy security is critical to competitiveness. Swedish biofuels can provide access to domestically sourced fuels for heat and power generation and can serve as an alternative to fossil fuels. They can also contribute to a more resilient energy supply by reducing dependence on imported fuels.

Uses:

Biofuels can be used for heating, electricity generation, and industrial processes. Biofuels used in vehicles are referred to as biofuels for transport, or biofuels for transportation purposes.

Local Energy:

Forestry and bioenergy products contribute to employment and prosperity in Sweden. Value is created locally, in the forest, at the sawmill, and by the contractors who supply the fuel. Energy sourced in Sweden strengthens society's overall resilience in times of crisis and conflict. Sweden has the raw materials, the expertise, and the technology.
