Certified forestry
SCA's forestry operations are certified, and we are also chain-of-custody certified. This means that we commit to follow the guidelines for responsible forestry and that our products can be sold as certified products. By being certified, we demonstrate that we work systematically with goals and improvements, while taking into account a variety of interests.
Certified forestry
SCA's forestry operations in Sweden are certified according to FSC® FM (FSC® C004466) since 1999 and according to PEFC FM (PEFC/05-23-131) since 2011.
FSC, Forest Stewardship Council, and PEFC, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes, are two global certification systems that both work towards responsible forestry and ensuring traceability throughout every step of the supply chain, from the forest to the customer.
These systems aim to ensure that forests are managed according to standardized norms that take environmental, economic, and social values into account. Both FSC and PEFC have forestry standards that are adapted to Swedish conditions.
This means that we commit to follow their guidelines for responsible forestry. We are also chain-of-custody certified, ensuring that products made from wood sourced from certified forests can be sold as certified products. Additionally, we ensure that non-certified raw materials do not originate from controversial sources.
Additionally, our forestry operations in Estonia and Latvia are certified according to both FSC and PEFC, while the forestry in Lithuania is FSC-certified.
Traceability and certified products

We oversee the entire production chain, from the forest to the final product. We ensure traceability through chain-of-custody certification. This allows our industries to sell certified products made from timber sourced from our certified forestry operations.
All raw materials are assessed according to our due diligence system. Uncertified raw materials that are purchased must, at a minimum, meet the requirements for FSC Controlled Wood. It is SCA Skog, as a raw material supplier, that ensures that the raw material complies with Swedish legislation, EU legislation, and FSC and PEFC requirements.
SCA is one of the world’s largest suppliers of certified forest industry products. All of SCA’s products, sawn timber, pulp, kraftliner, pellets, tall oil and turpentine, can be purchased as FSC- and PEFC-certified products.
SCA Skog, as well as SCA’s industries and sawmills, are certified according to FSC Chain-of-Custody (CoC) (FSC C018408, FSC C013162, FSC C023232) and PEFC Chain-of-Custody (CoC) (PEFC/05-31-292, PEFC/05-33-132, PEFC/05-32-133).
Our operations in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are also chain-of custody certified.
Controlled Wood
When SCA Skog purchases wood from other actors, not all raw materials are certified. By meeting the requirements for FSC Controlled Wood and PEFC Controlled Sources, we ensure that the raw material does not originate from unacceptable/controversial sources.
Certificates and audits
All certifications are third-party verified by independent certification companies accredited to perform certifications according to FSC® and PEFC standards. Certificates are issued for five years at a time and are followed up through annual audits. You can access our certificates via the link below.
Improved Environmental Work
Our environmental management system is an effective tool that helps us enhance our environmental efforts. SCA Skog has been ISO 14001 certified since 1998.
Forestry governed by extensive regulatory framework
In addition to our voluntary certification, our forestry is also governed by comprehensive national regulations. The Swedish Forestry Act, the Environmental Code, and species protection legislation form the legal foundation for Swedish forestry. Sweden’s regulatory framework is, in turn, connected to EU's rules and regulations.
Beyond these laws and regulations, we adhere to a range of ordinances, directives, and internal guiding documents – such as our Nature conservation strategy and environmental work guidelines. These are further complemented by additional guidelines and detailed instructions.
