Large amounts of gunpowder were used for road building and other types of construction around the works. The Royal Decree of 1858 regulated how gunpowder should be kept. There were heavy fines for breaking the rules. This gunpowder store was inspected for the first time on June 3, 1876 on behalf of the King’s Commanding Officer. It was then decided that no more than 50 “centers” (1 center = 42.5 kg) of gunpowder could be kept in storage, or in the “magazine,” which was the official designation.
