SCA Forestry manages 2.7 million hectares of forest land in northern Sweden as well as in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Its operations include forest management, timber purchasing and harvesting. Forestry activities are planned and carried out with a long-term perspective and with consideration for the use and development of forest resources over time.

Bioenergy in SCA’s value chain
Biofuels are an integral part of the forestry and sawmill industry value chain. Within SCA Bioenergy, renewable by-products from forestry and sawmill operations, such as logging residues, bark, sawdust, and wood chips, are recovered and refined into renewable fuels.
From forest to renewable energy

The forest

After harvesting
Following harvesting, SCA Renewable Energy makes use of parts of the tree that are not sent to sawmills or pulp mills, such as branches and tree tops. These materials are processed into biofuels for use in heat and energy production, making use of more of the harvested tree.

At the sawmill and pulp mill
When SCA Wood saws and planes timber into wood products, by-products such as bark, wood chips and sawdust are generated. Pulp production also generates a stream of bark.

Bioenergy
SCA processes these by-products into biofuels. Sawdust is pressed into pellets, while bark, wood chips and logging residues are supplied in the required mix and size fractions. Forestry also provides renewable fuels for use in heat and energy production.

Replanting
After harvesting, new trees are planted.
By-products are used for bioenergy
Branches and tree tops recovered from the forest after harvesting are used, among other things, to produce wood chips and logging residues. Bark from the sawmills is used as fuel for energy production at our sawmills and by our customers. Wood chips can be used in pulp production, while sawdust, a by-product of sawmilling, is primarily used in pellet production.
