Raw material sources
SCA’s sources for raw material primarily comes from our own forests and other forest owners' forests in Sweden, along with a small share of imports. Our wood procurement is concentrated to the northern Sweden, enabling us to maintain good oversight of harvest sites and nature values.
We have clear guidelines for the wood we purchase. All wood must be certified or come from controlled sources. All wood raw material used by SCA comes from responsibly managed forests.
All purchased raw material delivered to us must at least meet FSC’s standard for Controlled Wood. Controlled wood refers to wood that does not originate from unacceptable/controversial sources according to FSC Controlled Wood and PEFC Controlled Sources. This means, among other things, that we ensure the raw material is legally harvested, that high conservation values are not threatened, and that the harvesting does not contribute to deforestation.
We work to maximize the proportion of raw material that comes from FSC- or PEFC-certified forests.
Our wood raw material comes from:
- Own forests
- Chips from our own sawmills
- Purchases from private forest owners
- Purchases from other forestry companies and forest owner associations
- Imports, primarily from the Baltics
Refrains from illegally harvested wood
SCA actively refrains from illegally harvested wood raw material. We do not purchase raw material from forests with high conservation values where these values are at risk of being threatened or where harvesting occurs in violation of traditional customary rights and human rights.
Tree species in production
SCA’s production facilities used 11 million cubic meters of wood raw material in 2025. Almost all of the raw material flow (more than 96.6%) was from Sweden. The remaining raw material was from the Baltic States (2.5%) and other (0.9%).
The main part consist of spruce (Picea abies) and pine (Pinus sylvestris). A minor part consist of Contorta pine (Pinus contorta) and other tree species.
Instruction for sourcing of wood raw material
Our instruction for procurement of wood raw material covers all types of wood raw material and is a sub-instruction to SCA's sustainability policy. Wood raw material refers to wood fiber used in the production of timber, pulp, and paper products.
