Land for data centres, battery storage and other operations with high electricity demand

SCA owns large areas of land in northern Sweden and has identified locations where conditions may be suitable for establishing electricity-intensive operations.

Windmills

The electrification of society and rapid developments in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) are increasing the need for electricity and new infrastructure. At the same time, the need for flexibility and energy storage in the electricity system is growing.

This could include data centres or battery storage, as well as other operations with high electricity demand.

Combining land and energy

Through our wind power business, we have extensive experience in developing and leasing land for energy production and other infrastructure. This has given us knowledge of the interplay between land, energy production, the electricity grid and long-term investments.

For electricity-intensive operations, access to land, grid connections and sufficient power capacity are key prerequisites. SCA is therefore working to develop opportunities for establishing such operations at selected locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

SCA sees opportunities to contribute to development and growth by preparing land for potential establishments within digital infrastructure. Such initiatives can create opportunities for investment, employment and a stronger business community in the region where the land is located.

By making use of resources where they are available, local value can be created through investments, employment and business development.

A suitable location for digital infrastructure and other electricity-intensive operations is often characterised by good access to electricity, infrastructure, skills and land suitable for development. Local and regional ambitions for growth also play an important role in the assessment.

SCA takes a long-term approach to developing and managing its land and forests responsibly. Exploring opportunities where land can contribute to community development and local growth is a natural part of long-term land ownership.

Any land development project needs to be assessed with regard to the environment, land use, local conditions and benefits to society. SCA takes a long-term approach to developing new land areas and assesses the conditions for each individual project.

Consideration for nearby residents and other stakeholders is an important part of both the planning process and any other applicable assessments. The potential impact on the surrounding area is investigated, and as part of the process, consultations are held where those concerned have the opportunity to receive information, ask questions and provide feedback.

It is too early to say. The number of jobs depends on the scale and design of the project and the type of establishment involved. In general, establishments within digital infrastructure can contribute to both direct and indirect employment.

These are issues that need to be investigated further as part of the planning process and any subsequent assessments. The conditions and technical solutions vary between locations and projects, and each case is assessed individually.

Noise from a data centre mainly comes from cooling and ventilation equipment. The amount of noise depends, among other things, on the size of the data centre, the cooling technology used and how the facility is designed.

Noise impacts therefore need to be assessed for each individual project. For a potential establishment, calculations are made to assess how sound propagates in the surrounding area and what noise levels may occur at nearby homes and other noise-sensitive environments. The design and any noise-reducing measures are adapted based on the results.

An establishment needs to be assessed based on the availability of grid capacity and electrical power. How a new electricity user affects the electricity system depends, among other things, on where the establishment is located, its power requirements and the capacity of the electricity grid. The grid operator is responsible for assessing the conditions for connection and any need for grid reinforcements. Through its wind power business, SCA also works to add new generation capacity to the electricity grid.
