Managing a forest the size of Belgium (and other surprising facts)

  • News

We know you are experts in corrugated sheet and box conversion. And as longstanding, loyal SCA customers (thank you!), many of you are already familiar with how we do things. Still, here are five facts you may find surprising:

  1. Europe’s largest private forest owner
What? Yes, it’s true. SCA owns 2.7 million hectares of certified, responsibly managed forestland in northern Sweden – Europe’s largest private holding. It’s the renewable engine behind both our fibre sourcing and our green energy.

  2. Home to the world’s largest kraftliner machine
Our Obbola mill houses the largest kraftliner machine on the planet – built for scale, quality, and efficiency to meet growing demand. Need more capacity? Give us a call.

  3. Behind the first major kraftliner mill installation in Europe since 1975
The Obbola mill isn’t just big—it’s historic. Our expansion marks the first major kraftliner investment in Europe in nearly 50 years. It’s a bold signal that we're here for the long term.

  4. Investing €750 million to increase capacity
Our transformation of the Obbola mill is backed by a significant €750 million investment – expanding production capacity, modernising operations, and securing long-term supply of high-quality, sustainable kraftliner to meet growing market demand.

  5. Committing €100 million to sustainability improvements
The Obbola investment also included approximately €100 million earmarked for environmental improvements at the site. For example, a biofuel-fired mesa furnace has been installed, with the potential to eliminate the use of fossil fuels and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20,000 tonnes.
