LCA (life cycle analysis) is a method of analysing the environmental impact of products and services that considers their full life cycle. A key strength of LCA is that it studies whole product systems and thus enables business to avoid mitigating one environmental impact at the expense of aggravating another.
A carbon footprint is the total effect a product or a service have on the emissions of climate gases, of which carbon dioxide is the most important one. To calculate a carbon footprint, you need to make a life cycle analysis of the product.

The key cause of the climate change is emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels.
Another key cause is the deforestation that is occurring in certain parts of the world. Very simply, we need to reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide and we need to bind more of the carbon dioxide already circulating in the atmosphere. Forestry and forest products play a key role in this, since our products consist largely of carbon that the growing trees have absorbed from the atmosphere.
SCA Östrand supplies heat to Timrå Municipality district-heating network. The delivery to Municipality of Sundsvall is a joint venture with SCA Ortviken. The energy extracted from SCA Ortviken's flue gas condensation provides surplus heat to the district heating network corresponding to the heating requirements of 5,000 single family houses per year.
SCA Östrand will after the expansion in 2018 become the leader in terms of resource management and will generate an even greater energy surplus that will be sold in the form of green electricity and district heating.
SCA Vind is also on track to become a major producer of renewable electricity.
In 2006 a new soda recovery boiler went into operation at SCA's pulp mill in Östrand, Sweden. The recovery boiler, which burns the waste from pulp production, will allow increased pulp capacity and also double the production of electric power.
The recovery boiler is designed to provide maximum electricity production combined with the steam turbine. The fuel to produce this electrical energy is more than 98 per cent biofuel, mostly black liquor (an aqueous solution of lignin residues, hemicellulose, and the inorganic chemicals used in the process).The soda recovery boiler and turbine increases energy efficiency and the production capacity from our black liquor and other biofuels is 500 million kWh of green electricity.
Östrand pulp mill invested in a new lime kiln, which was inaugurated in November 2011. The lime kiln is the first in the world to substitute fuel oil for wood powder and the fuel pellets that Östrand uses to grind to wood powder are made from sawdust from SCA's sawmills. By switching to the new lime kiln, Östrand reduced its carbon footprint by 80%.
After the expansion of the factory, which will be completed in June 2018, the current level of 25 000 tonnes of fossil CO2 in the future be 6 000 to 25 000 tonnes of CO2 per year (double production, which means a 50% reduction of CO2/tonne pulp).
