We produce 430,000 tonnes per year of our kraft pulp Celeste. The Celeste product group comprises four strong, totally chlorine-free, softwood kraft pulp grades: Celeste, Celeste Strong, Celeste Tissue and Celeste Filter. Depending on our customers’ requirements, the grades are manufactured with varying brightness levels. It can be delivered both as sheet and flash dried.
SCA Östrand has developed special pulp grades with adapted properties for printing & writing paper, tissue paper, and fine paper. Product development covers the entire value chain, from the selection of suitable wood raw materials to the preparation of the finished pulp. Celeste pulps are characterised by excellent beating properties, purity and high strength. Thanks to the pulp's excellent beatability, the energy used in beating can be reduced, as can costs, in relation to other pulp.

Celeste Strong was initially developed as a reinforcement pulp for wood containing paper, but is also used in a number of special applications. It is available in ISO brightness 80, 85, and 90 percent and can be delivered both as sheet and flash dried.
Celeste Strong is characterised by a high bulk, fibre length and tear strength as well as a higher beating resistance compared with Celeste. These properties also fit for new exciting areas of application in which the long fibres and the high bulk are highly suitable attributes.

Celeste Filter was developed in 2012 as there was a demand from the market for a grade focusing on the filter segment. It is available in ISO brightness 90 percent and is only delivered as flash dried.
Celeste Filter is characterized by high porosity especially at low beating. The product has proven to perform well for a variety of filter products. In combination with the strong environmental profile it has been highly appreciated by our customers.
During the development of Celeste Filter we have cooperated with filter paper producers in order to understand the demands on the market that needs to be fulfilled. To achieve a high porosity grade it is essential to select the ingoing wood raw materials very carefully and to have a tailor made production process.
Celeste Filter is developed for the filter segment and is therefore only flash dried as this drying process enhances the porosity properties. As for all flash dried Celeste pulp the bales can be delivered without bale wires. The bale wires are replaced with water-soluble glue that facilitates handling of pulp bales prior to beating.
Celeste Eco Profile
The combination of TCF, FSC® and PEFC, and our commitment to continuously improve our sustainability has given us a leading environmental position among kraft pulp mills.
Celeste products are characterized by its unique environmental profile. In our constant efforts to improve the production process and to minimize the mill's impact on the environment, extensive investments have been made. These involve significant environmental improvements, as the Recovery Boiler and turbine, which reduces air emissions and makes us self-sufficient in terms of green electricity. It also includes new biological wastewater treatment plant that reduces the amount of emissions released and a modern TFC (Totally Chlorine Free) bleach plant with very low water consumption. Our latest achievement is the Bio Loop project where we replace two oil fuelled lime kilns with one new bio pellet fuelled. The project reduced our carbon footprint with over 80% and increased our integration with our forest operations further by using even more of the tree. In addition, investments have been made in logistics including railroad tracks and a new dock, all aimed at reducing our impact on the environment.
Our well managed forest holdings, together with energy-effective processes and optimized transports enable us to reduce our Carbon Footprint. We have developed skilled competence for customer cooperation regarding Carbon Footprint or other questions.
A certified management system is the basis of our operations. This includes the environmental management system, ISO 14001, quality assurance in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 50001 for energy management. We have high demands on our suppliers and have procedures for our chemical management, which is monitored against our chemical data base. Furthermore, we fulfil the requirements for several sustainability systems for example the Nordic Swan, ECO-label and BfR.
All Celeste grades can be purchased as FSC® and PEFC certified.
Celeste Manufacturing Process
The kraft pulp process
Each day of the year, the equivalent of 130 logging trucks of timber is unloaded in the timber yard from trains, boats and logging trucks.
The timber is debarked and chopped into wood-chips, which are stored in separate piles depending on the wood type. This makes it possible to manufacture pulp that is adapted to the specific quality requirements of the customer.
The chips are cooked in a continuous digester, drained, screened and washed before bleaching with oxygen, peroxide and ozone. It is bleached from 80 to 90 percent ISO brightness and becomes white and free from impurities. The pulp is bleached in a TFC process (Totally Chlorine Free), which is conducted without the addition of any chlorine chemicals.
The bleached pulp is then dried in a sheet-drying machine or in a flash dryer. Subsequently, the dried pulp is packed in bales, wrapped and transported with trucks to the Environmental friendly logistics terminal for onward transport with boat, train or truck to our customers.
The liquor from the digester (black liquor) contains spent chemicals and dissolved wood residues. The black liquor is transferred to the evaporator, where the dry content is increased before it is burned in the soda recovery boiler. The chemicals are recovered in the soda recovery boiler and the wood residues are converted into heat for the production of steam. The final processing of the chemicals takes place in the causticising department and new white liquor is formed, which is used in the digester, and the circle is completed.
The high-pressure steam that is produced in the Recovery Boiler is reduced in a turbine for green electricity production. Steam with a lower pressure is used in the manufacturing process. In addition, excess heat can be used for heating the premises. SCA Östrand also supplies heat to the Timrå Municipality district-heating network.
SCA Östrand's pulp mill in Timrå has produced kraft pulp for nearly 80 years. It was in conjunction with the formation of SCA (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget) in 1929 and considering the excellent fibre of the forests in the north that financier Ivar Krueger decided to build Europe's largest and most modern kraft pulp mill in Östrand in 1929. A mill, which, at that time as it is now, was leading in terms of modern technology and favourable working environment.
In 1995 a totally new TCF bleach plant was built in SCA Östrand and the new Kraft pulp product "Celeste" was born. Since then we have continued to develop Celeste to be perhaps the most environmental compatible Kraft pulp available. Today Celeste is a product family with adapted properties to different end-uses such as tissue and wood-containing papers.
