In 2025, SCA Skog achieved a milestone by transporting a total of 3.1 million cubic meters of roundwood by rail. This marks the highest timber volume in SCA's railway system to date. "Transporting timber by rail is beneficial for both the environment and profitability," says Viktor Wasell, Logistics Manager at SCA Skog.

The railway network plays a key role in SCA Skog's logistics strategy. With 13 strategically located timber terminals, spanning from Stockaryd in Småland to Murjek in Norrbotten, most of which are owned by SCA, the company can efficiently and smoothly load trains. Nearly all the volume on the trains heads directly to industries, with only a small portion transported between timber terminals.

"Maintaining a high and stable rail volume is critical for us. It creates the right conditions for cost-efficient timber flows while reducing our climate impact," Viktor explains and adds:
"Our rail transports reduce emissions by 51,700 tons of carbon dioxide per year compared to using trucks. That equals 16.8 million liters of diesel!"

Rail transports account for approximately 45 percent of the transportation work required for SCA Skog to supply SCA’s industries with raw material.

"Ensuring high railway volumes is essential for the seamless functioning of our transport. By shifting large volumes of timber from road to rail, we strengthen both our cost-efficiency and our sustainability efforts. This record demonstrates what we can achieve when we work long-term and collaboratively," says Viktor.

  • A fully loaded train with roundwood weighs around 3,500 tons and is pulled by two locomotives.
  • One such train equals 55 timber trucks.
  • On an average week, SCA Skog operates 45–55 train departures within the system.
  • The average transport distance for our railway transport is 268 km.
