Wood pellets are an environmentally friendly, renewable energy manufactured from sawdust and wood shavings. When the sawdust and shavings are dried and compressed into pellets it produces a fuel with a high energy content and consistent moisture content. Wood pellets can be used in stoves, heaters in single-family homes and large heating plants.
Pellets do not contribute to the greenhouse effect, as pellets are climate-neutral. This means that burning pellets does not emit more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than the carbon dioxide absorbed by the tree during its life – so you are not contributing to global warming.
If you choose Bionorr pellets, you also receive climate-smart pellets. Our production uses almost exclusively sustainable energy. Bionorr's sawdust dryer is operated using bioenergy – the fine sawdust that was screened and set aside between storage and delivery. The electricity used is from wind power, generated on SCA's own forest land. Moreover, waste heat is supplied to Härnösand's district heating grid. Pellets manufacturing in Luleå uses some local energy surplus from SSAB in the drying process. This is why we say that SCA's pellets are not only climate-neutral, they are also climate-smart. Raw materials for SCA's pellets are taken from SCA's own forests and other controlled forests in Norrland. No forest is harvested solely for pellets production. Pellets are manufactured using by-products from our forest industry operations, meaning sawdust from sawmills in the pellet plant's local area.
SCA's pellets are Chain of Custody certified according to FSC. SCA's forest operations are certified in accordance with FSC and Chain of Custody, which means we have control of the wood content in the entire chain from forest to pellets. FSC is the mark of responsible forestry. https://se.fsc.org/se-se/om-fsc
Ecolabelled pellets – a better choice for the environment. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency makes demands on the contents of the pellets and on careful fuel extraction. In addition, for fuel with the Good Environmental Choice eco-label, money is set aside in a fund towards projects that promote biodiversity in the forest and countryside. https://www.naturskyddsforeningen.se/bra-miljoval/biobransle
Over the past 25 years we have learnt what it takes to manufacture energy-rich pellets with high and consistent quality. The more consistent the quality, the more likely you will experience problem-free heating. Over the years, Bionorr pellets have received favorable rating from both the Swedish Energy Agency and Råd & Rön. In 2015, Råd & Rön tested 8 mm Bionorr pellets manufactured in Härnösand and these took the top spot in the resulting comparison. We guarantee equivalent characteristics for all pellets sold by SCA's brands.

Biomass briquettes is a convenient alternative to wood. Concentrated energy made from dried and compressed sawdust and wood shavings. Biomass briquettes have a high energy content and must therefore be burnt carefully until you see how your equipment reacts. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions. The easiest method is to place the briquettes on a bed of embers. Otherwise, it is similar to lighting wood: use small sticks, paper, kindling or similar and allow this to burn thoroughly before adding the briquettes. Energy content about 4.7 kWh/kg Dry matter content 90% Ash content 0.5% Store in a dry place!
Biomass briquettes are only sold by our distributors.
How pellets are made
From pine and spruce sawdust, to hard pieces of concentrated bioenergy.
The sawdust is transported from local sawmills to the plant site. Tractors stack the sawdust and continuously feed the loading dock at the plant. The sawdust is then ground to a fine powder while hot flue gas is used to dry the material. The dried and finely ground powder is then pressed through a hole matrix and converted into energy-rich pellets. When the pellets are pressed through the matrix they are about 100 degrees Celsius. They are then cooled to suitable storage temperature. After storage, the pellets are screened and delivered to customers in bulk or in sacks.
