PEFC stands for the "Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification."
PEFC was formed in 1999 and is an international, non-governmental umbrella organization dedicated to the assessment and mutual recognition of national forest certification systems for sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.
PEFC was formed by private forest owners in Europe during the 1990s as a credible and effective certification system, particularly suited to small and medium-sized properties. Large forest owners and industrial companies – both private and public organizations – also became affiliated over time.
The Swedish PEFC system comprises: forest certification, contractor certification and chain-of-custody certification.
PEFC certification demonstrates that SCA's forest management meets PEFC's criteria for responsible and sustainable forest management. The certification applies to SCA Skog's five forest management districts.
