SCA comments criticism on nature conservation. Dedicates more resources to planning
The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has raised formal complaints for poor nature consideration in four of SCA’s fellings and for SCA violating the FSC forest management standard. SCA confirms in a comment to the complaints that there are shortcomings in the nature consideration on the sites, but through setting aside forests with high nature qualities adjacent to the felled areas, the company has adequately protected the biodiversity of the forests.

Tunadal sawmill invests SEK 210 M and reduce staff by 22
Intensive work is going on in SCA’s Tunadal sawmill with the SEK 210 M investment in a new automatic grading mill. The new plant will be operative this summer and will allow for increased production and improved product quality. The new technology is less work intensive and the staff of the sawmill will be reduce by 22, of which five employees will be redundant.
SCA takes step into stores - produces solid-wood shelving for IKEA
SCA Timber has now taken a step into IKEA’s shelves in northern Europe with the solid-wood Gorm shelving unit. SCA Timber and IKEA have signed a long-term agreement covering delivery of at least one million shelves annually. SCA’s partner in Kramfors, Sweden, TräTeam, is investing SEK 35 million in equipment for manufacturing and ten employees in two shifts will maintain the shelving production.
SCA inaugurates window component plant and provides 24 new jobs in Munksund
On Thursday, 19 March, Norrbotten County Governor Per-Ola Eriksson and SCA CEO Jan Johansson inaugurated SCA’s new window components plant at the Munksund Sawmill in Piteå, Sweden. SCA has invested close to SEK 100 million in a plant for the manufacture of window components. The new plant will produce slightly more than 30,000 cubic meters, five million running meters, of window components in two shifts. Twenty four people were newly employed for the operations, an increase in personnel at the Munksund Sawmill of 20%.
SCA Östrand applies for new environmental permit

Vilhelmina sawmill invests and reduce workforce

Holmsund sawmill reduce production
Due to the declining demand on the market for wood products, SCA’s sawmill in Holmsund in northern Sweden reduces production 2009 by 20 per cent, from 93 000 cubic metres of wood products to 77 000 cubic metres.
Eleven employees redundant at Tunadal sawmill

SCA switches to "green" diesel
SCA Transforest is switching to the use of environment-friendly diesel at its harbor terminal operations in Sweden. All diesel-driven forklifts, loaders, cranes and trucks at the operations in Umeå and Sundsvall will be switching fuel, from conventional diesel to more environment-friendly synthetic diesel.

The climate in focus in environmental report from SCA Forest Products
Pulp and paper products from SCA Forest Products caused emissions of one million tonnes of carbon dioxide when delivered at customers during 2007. During the same time SCA’s own forests sequestered twice that amount, net, and SCA’s extensive forest fuel operations lead to that emissions of one million tonnes of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels could be avoided.

Interest in environmentally certified products is increasing throughout Europe. During the first five months of the year, SCA’s deliveries of FSC-certified publication paper rose by 56 percent compared with the year-earlier period.
Robust Interforest Terminal capacity increase
Interforest Terminal Rotterdam (ITR) has completed a significant investment programme. The stevedoring company has increased both its transhipment and storage capacity and its service level.
SCA initiates container traffic to Hamburg
As of 1 March 2008, SCA Transforest and the container shipping company UniFeeder are initiating weekly container traffic between Sundsvall and Umeå in Sweden and Hamburg in Germany. The traffic will also include Kotka in Finland. From Hamburg over seas container traffic connects to all major markets.

Action program to raise level of SCA’s nature conservation
After several fellings with inadequate nature conservation have been observed, SCA is now making comprehensive efforts to ensure good nature conservation in the company’s forestry operations. Through better planning and training as well as follow-up and feedback of results, SCA wants to avoid the repetition of any mistakes.
SCA Timber reduces production
Through a number of measures, SCA Timber will reduce its production of solid-wood products by nearly 15% during the first quarter 2008 compared with this year’s production level. In addition to reductions in production at the Munksund and Rundvik sawmills, an extended production stop over the Christmas and New Year holidays will be implemented at all sawmills. A stop on overtime work will also be introduced.
Rundvik sawmill to cut production. More than 20 employees affected
SCA’s sawmill in Rundvik in Nordmaling Municipality is cutting production from the current level of 240,000 cubic meters of solid-wood products of spruce to 170,000 cubic meters. Statutory negotiations have been initiated with the unions to reduce the workforce by slightly more than 20 positions.
Munksunds sawmill cuts production - ten employees redundant
SCA Timber’s Munksund sawmill will reduce production by ten per cent from the turn of the year. The reduced production leads to ten employees becoming redundant.
Legionella in water hoses at the Ortviken paper mill
In the ongoing broad investigation at the Ortviken paper mill, increased levels of Legionella bacteria have been found in a few places in the mill. It concerns mainly a number of washing- and firehoses that are seldom in use. In the process water nor in the biological water treatment, no Legionella has been found.

The Swedish government’s port strategy commission recommends that the Port of Sundsvall be one of several to be given priority in the future.
Employee at Ortviken paper mill falls ill with Legionnaire’s disease
An employee at Ortviken paper mill has fallen ill with Legionnaire’s disease and is recovering following hospital treatment. It is not known if there is any connection between the workplace and the cause of the illness, but as a safety measure, an investigation into possible sources of the disease at the mill has commenced immediately.

SCA is expanding production of mechanical pulp at Ortviken paper mill. The SEK 800 million investment will allow paper production at Ortviken to continue to increase, while providing significant quality improvements. The investment will be completed by spring 2009.
SCA and Statkraft in major wind power venture and to study eco-friendly extension of hydropower
SCA and Statkraft are to form a jointly owned company for a major investment in wind power in northern Sweden. The plans involve production of 2,800 GWh of wind power electricity per year in seven wind farms on forest land in Västernorrland and Jämtland, an investment of SEK 16 billion.
SCA Transforest starts intermodal loading at the Tunadal port
On Tuesday 4 September SCA Transforest will start intermodal traffic from the Tunadal port in collaboration with Green Cargo, Cargonet and ÖTC. The traffic will initially involve one train departure per day, weekdays, linking Sundsvall and Gothenburg with arrival at the Tunadal port at 08:00 and departure at 16.00 hours.

SCA Timber AB today completed the acquisition of British-based Severn Timber Products Ltd, through ratification from the main international SCA Group board. Severn Timber is a major supplier of wood products to the UK builders’ merchant market, with headquarters and planing facilities in Welshpool, Wales.
SCA invests £3 million in Tunadal Sawmill
SCA Timber AB announces a new investment of just under £3 million in a new progressive kiln for Tunadal sawmill. The new kiln will have a capacity of more than 100,000 cubic metres and will allow the sawmill to increase production and further processing. This is an addition to the investment already announced covering a further seven new chamber kilns at Tunadal, construction of which is already in progress.

Munksund Sawmill seeking to increase production
SCA’s sawmill in Munksund, outside Piteå, Sweden, is developing favorably. Production records were surpassed last year and the level of production is approaching the 400,000 cubic meters of solid-wood products annually that is currently permitted.
SCA operates combi-train to Gothenburg
Beginning on 13 April, SCA Transforest will begin operating a combi-train between Sundsvall and Gothenburg. The train will be loaded with containers and initially one train a week will be operated, with the number of departures increasing in the future.
Increased presence of Legionella bacteria confirmed at Ortviken paper mill
A new and more extensive series of tests has confirmed the discovery made earlier this summer of Legionella bacteria in the wastewater treatment plant at Ortviken paper mill. A more limited presence of the same bacteria has also been discovered to exist at the Östrand pulp plant.

On Tuesday, 26 April, Gustav Ström and Stina Erhardsson became the winners of the first Wood Design Competition at the Wood Design study program in Kramfors. County Governor Gerhard Larsson presented the award at the Höga Kusten Wood Academy in Kramfors.

Nils-Johan holds a mechanical engineering degree, majoring in pulp and paper technology, and has worked within the sawmill industry since 1999. Most recently, he served as Sales Manager at SCA Timber, with responsibility for sales of solid-wood products to Japan and Southeast Asia.
SCA re-structures in response to sales growth
SCA Timber Supply is restructuring its business responding to a doubling of sales in 18 months. Ådalen entrepreneurs cooperate to sell DIY decks in UK
In a unique cooperative venture, three wood-processing companies in Ådalen, Sweden, together with SCA, have developed a consumer product that is now to be launched on a large scale in 200 building-materials stores throughout the UK. The new product is a modular system in impregnated wood for building terraces, decks and patios. The homebuilder can choose exactly the size and model of outdoor area required, then assemble the precut components using only a screwdriver and a spirit level.

SCA invests MSEK 180 in new bleach plant at Ortviken
SCA invests MSEK 180 in a new bleach plant at the Ortviken paper mill in Sundsvall. The bleach plant will enable Ortviken to continue its development of improved paper qualities. Primarily, the mill’s capacity will increase to produce improved newsprint with higher brightness and better print properties.
SCA acquires BCL’s Stoke Distribution Centre
SCA Timber UK has expanded by acquiring the BCL Group’s Stoke-on-Trent central distribution site in a deal announced today, 2 May 2003. The 225,000 sq ft distribution facility currently serves timber product outlets such as major DIY retail chains and builders’ merchants. Some 114 staff from the former BCL facility will join the new organisation, other BCL staff remaining with the BCL Group. The new name for the Stoke operation is SCA Timber Supply Ltd: the company officially came into existence on 1st May 2003.

SCA has completed the acquisition of Scaninge Timber’s sawmills after gaining approval from the Swedish Competition Authority. Effective 1 March this year, Scaninge sawmills Bollsta, Graningebruk, Rundvik and Vilhelmina are part of SCA Timber.
BioNorr invests SEK 60 M to double biofuel production
BioNorr, which has produced fuel pellets since 1992, is investing SEK 60 M in a new production line at its plant in Härnösand, Sweden. As a consequence, the capacity for production of fuel pellets increases from the current 80,000 tons annually to 160,000 tons.

Jerry Larsson has been appointed new manager at SCA's Tunadal sawmill in Sundsvall. He succeeds Ulf Larsson, who was acting manager. Jerry Larsson is currently manager of the Bollsta sawmill.
Final report on cancer cases at Ortviken paper mill. No link found to work environment
In a final report submitted to the Swedish Work Environment Inspectorate regarding the testicle cancer cases at the Ortviken paper mill, it was concluded that it was not possible to detect any link to the work environment. The preliminary results of all investigations were reported previously, but they have now been definitively evaluated and compiled.
