Östrand pulp mill produces bleached sulphate (kraft) pulp and CTMP pulp.
The pulp is used primarily for SCA’s own products, that is, hygiene products, publication papers, packaging and tissue products. A portion of production also goes to outside customers, which include paper mills in Sweden and around the world.
During manufacture of kraft pulp, woodchips are cooked into a pulp that is then bleached using hydrogen peroxide and oxygen to achieve the cleanest possible cellulose fibers. Raw turpentine is also extracted from the wood.
During the manufacture of CTMP pulp, woodchips that have been treated with sodium sulphite and steam are used before it is ground into pulp that is then bleached using hydrogen peroxide. We produce sodium sulphite ourselves from sulphur dioxide and sodium hydroxide.
Sulphur dioxide is a condensed gas that is classified as toxic. Sodium hydroxide is merely corrosive. Hydrogen peroxide is both oxidizing and corrosive, while oxygen is only oxidizing. Raw turpentine is an inflammable liquid.
Hydrogen peroxide and sulphur dioxide are transported to Östrand using tanker trucks. Sodium hydroxide, on the other hand, arrives by boat to Östrand, while raw turpentine is shipped out by boat. Raw turpentine is also transported from Ortviken to Östrand by truck. Oxygen arrives by truck to Östrand. The chemicals are stored in tanks at Östrand.
