The Östrand pulp mill, in Timrå, produces 425,000 tons totally chlorine free (TCF) bleached kraft pulp. About half of the plant’s production is used for SCA’s own manufacturing of publication papers and hygiene products and the remaining volume is sold to external customers. The plant also produces 95,000 tons chemical thermo-mechanical pulp for hygiene, packaging and other products.
Special pulp grades with properties adapted specifically for publication papers and tissue products have been developed at the Östrand plant. Product development activities cover the entire value chain, from selection of suitable wood raw materials to treatment of the finished pulp.
Östrand is quality-certified in accordance with ISO 9001 and environmentally certified in accordance with ISO 14001 and energy certified according to EN 16001. Östrand is also chain-of-custody approved in accordance with FSC and can produce FSC-certified pulp.
Recovery boiler
The soda recovery boiler which became operational in 2006 generates 500 GWh of green electricity per year. This makes the Östrand pulp mill self-sufficient in both electricity and heat. The investment totalled SEK 1.6 billion.
