General hunting rules and regulations

Hunting shall be conducted in accordance with the laws and regulations applicable in game hunting legislation in Sweden. All hunting shall be characterized by high ethics.

  • Each hunter must have a valid weapons license for the weapon being used. National hunting licenses and fees for hunting rights on SCA’s lands must be paid for the period covered by the concession before hunting starts.

Shooting test

  • Hunters who desire to hunt moose on SCA’s lands must undergo a shooting test each year. The Swedish Sportsmen's Association’s bronze moose badge is the standard for the shooting proficiency test
  • The shooting position is standing and no other support is permitted other than a single-leg shooting stick or sling support. Shooters with a handicap that does not permit shooting in the standing position may use any other shooting position other than prone. The necessary support may be used
  • The shooting test must be carried out with your own moose hunting rifle.

Hunting leader and wildlife inventories

  • All hunting parties shall appoint a leader and a replacement for the moose hunting party. The hunting leader is appointed by SCA’s representative in collaboration with the members of the hunting party. If possible, the hunting leader shall be employed within SCA
  • All hunting parties shall participate in conducting inventories of the moose stock, grazing impact surveys and similar studies that are coordinated over large areas for the purpose of tracking the development of the moose stock, forage availability and other conditions. This is also desirable in conducting coordinated predator inventories.

Bear hunting

  • The rules governing bear hunting set by the National Environment Protection Board and County Administration Board apply for bear hunting
  • Within SCA’s licensed hunting areas, a moose hunting license is required to hunt bear
  • Putting out carrion to attract bears is not permitted in accordance with the decision by the National Environment Protection Board in 2001.

In the forest

  • All hunters shall wear safety-orange hatbands, caps, vests or similar items when moose hunting and during other joint hunting with rifles. This is a strong recommendation in all other types of hunting
  • Hunting towers and other stands for hunting may be built after consultation with SCA’s local representative. Each hunting party is responsible for existing hunting towers and other facilities so that these are not a hazard to the general public. Older or damaged towers shall be torn down or rebuilt. The basic rule is that hunting towers are contructed entirely in wood
  • Pollution in the form of plastics, brightly coloured panelboard materials or similar items is not permitted.
Hunting towers and stands shall not be set-up along public and heavily trafficked roads
  • Caution shall prevail when clearing sighting paths in growing forests. Clearing of lines of fire in economically valuable forest is not allowed. If the foliage is thick due to growth, it may be more suitable to move the location of the shooting line
  • If downed moose are transported out of the forest by machine, these shall be of a type and suitable size not to damage the vegetation or soil
  • Trained and experienced tracking dogs shall be present for all hunting
  • Only approved traps may be used in trapping. Placement shall be based on consultation with the local persons responsible within the company
  • Lead and steel shot pellets should be avoided in heavily forested areas.

Moose and small game hunting at the same time

  • When moose and small game hunting are carried out at the same time, this shall be coordinated by both parties to ensure a high margin of safety.  Intrusion into small game hunting areas shall be avoided to the highest possible extent. Moreover, immediately before and during the opening of the moose season, consultation shall be carried out to restrict part of the hunting area to small game hunting. In one-day license areas, a limitation in sales during specific periods, as determined by the forestry district, can ensure this safety separation.
