Nature consideration when harvesting

A landowner is responsible for nature conservation, but SCA can help.

Young European Pied Flycatcher, young spruce and mountain ash.

When you sell timber to us, we can offer knowledge of the natural capital we find on your property. We can also offer advice about achieving a favourable balance between timber production and nature conservation.

You must decide what level of nature conservation you want to achieve. The lowest level complies with the Forestry Act, but you can also choose SCA’s instructions for nature conservation or set your own goals. This could entail that the harvesting team makes high stumps of all standing dead trees, or leaves high stumps along boundaries.

SCA’s nature conservation guidelines for final felling comprise small forest areas with special characteristics that are important for animals and plants or care-demanding habitats, as well as waterways, edge zones, conservation value trees and cultural environments.

Environmentally sound forest machines

The machines that are used for SCA's forest management satisfy the requirements of our mechanical environmental policy. This entails that the harvesting team uses biodegradable hydraulic oil, Mk 1 diesel and non-toxic antifreeze in their forest machines.
