"If you can not measure it, you can not improve it." Kelvin (1824–1907)
So, are we now measuring our impact, our sustainability?
Yes, but, we are on a journey in to a complete system of measurement in two important respects:
- Understanding the total life cycle impacts of products and services – cradle to grave
- Agreeing international standards – so businesses work to the same system of measurement
- A standard system of measurement will have the following advantages: Businesses in the same supply chain can agree what sustainability issues are important . And, two companies operating in different countries can compare their performance and contribution to sustainability.
The Global Consumer Goods Forum (GCF) is developing and promoting international standards in the grocery business.
GCF recently developed “A Global Language for Packaging and Sustainability”.

As well as developing a global language GCF promotes the concept of “rightweighting” packaging. Rightweighting ensures that packaging is not too light to the point it fails and the product is damaged, and, at the same time is not too heavy that it adds to transport and handling emissions and costs.

At the same time packaging should avoid composite (multi-materials contents) and be designed and labelled for packaging.
The CGF continues its work in many other applications. This supports the global journey to understanding sustainability.
