Closing the loop is an important part of a strategy for better resource use, using recovered material as a resource for new products.
Making use of recovered products reduces the uses of the resource itself, as well as the energy, water and other emissions associated with production.
SCA, as an integrated business, closes the loop on its own products.
SCA Product Lifecycle – Office waste to tissue
- We collect waste office papers
- These are transported efficiently to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
- The MRF processes and sorts the material (95% is recycled, the rest is recovered)
- Paper is compacted and baled for transport to the paper mill
- The paper mill pulps the office papers, cleans the fibre and manufactures new ‘jumbo reels’
- ‘Jumbo reels’ are converted into small rolls and packs
- Washroom products are used again in offices

SCA Product Lifecycle – Cardboard box to cardboard box
- We use cardboard boxes in shops, offices and factories
- Used boxes are compacted, baled and transported to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
- Small bales are sorted and non-paper materials are removed
- Large, wire tied bales are stored and transported to the paper mill
- The paper mill pulps and remanufacturers the cardboard into ‘jumbo reels’
- ‘Jumbo reels’ are converted to sheets for remanufacture into cardboard boxes
- Cardboard boxes are packed and filled and return to shops, offices and factories

The same principles of closing the loop apply to many other materials. Please contact us to talk about how SCA can help you close the loop on your resources.
