Our planet is moving toward a population of over nine billion. With a vision of “One World – Planet and People”, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) recognises the need to think differently about how we resource our needs.
SCA shares the need for long term vision, to drive to sustainable production and sustainable consumption. In this section we give key examples and references of how SCA and you can share this vision.
To achieve this vision, we need to think differently about how we use resources.
We all need to limit our use of non-renewable resources (materials, water and energy for example). WBCSD suggests that we should consume no more than five tonnes of non-renewable resources per year, down from 85 tonnes per person in the US in 2009. (WBCSD 2050)
This needs a wholesale change in how we produce, use, reuse and recycle products.
SCA has long recognised wood as a renewable resource, we replant three trees for very one we harvest.
Now, we also recognise the value of resources in the “urban forest”. The “urban forest” is made up of 3.7 million tonnes of paper and card we dispose of as consumers every year, in England alone.
Capturing and processing materials, processing to the highest quality, saves not just the materials themselves but all the energy and water invested in those materials.
By designing for longer use, re-using products and parts and closing the loop we can drive towards the vision of “One World, - Planet and People”.
