Star, like our other products, is characterised by a prominent environmental profile. We can provide Star as FSC® and PEFC certified, and our ambition is to conduct world-class environmental work.
Thanks to our unique HT technology we manufacture high yield pulps with a relatively low energy. We work continuously to improve and develop the wastewater-treatment and production processes with the aim of reducing the environmental impact.
SCA Östrand have in recent years invested a lot to be world class in environmental performance. A modern five-stage biological wastewater-treatment, a bark boiler, a state of the art recovery boiler (Kraft Pulp process) and a new bio-fuel burned Lime Kiln (Kraft Pulp process) are some of the major investments made. In addition investments have also been made in logistics including railroad track into the mill and a new dock, all aimed at reducing our environmental impact.
Our well managed forest holdings together with energy-effective processes and optimized transports enable us to reduce our Carbon Footprint. Our latest contribution is that we during 2012 will lower the Carbon footprint from the mill with more than 80% by using bio-pellets powder in the bark boiler and in the Lime Kiln instead of oil. We have developed skilled competence for customer cooperation regarding Carbon Footprint or other questions.
Certified operations
A certified operations system is the basis for our operations. This includes the environmental management system ISO 14001, quality assurance in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 16000 for energy management, which is an energy management system. We have high demands on our suppliers and have procedures for our chemical management, which is monitored against our chemical database. Furthermore, we fulfil the requirements for several sustainability systems for example the Nordic Swan, ECO-lable and BfR.
SCA Östrand was also one of the first pulp mills in the world to be certified according to FSC® and PEFC Chain of Custody and today all Star grades can be purchased as FSC certified.
