Increased demand for FSC-boxboard

2010-07-01 The demand for FSC-certified boxboard is increasing within the food industry. A gratifying development according to both cardboard manufactures, converters as well as suppliers.

At Cascades Djupafors in Blekinge, one of the boxboard mills that are most focused on the environment and climate in the world, a larger interest for issues concerning the climate and a sustainable future has been noticed.

- For instance, the interest for FSC-certified boxboard, such as our product Duprint, has increased very much. It feels very good to be able to fulfill the demands and wishes of our clients, says Björn Sandberg, VD at Cascades Djupafors.

A current example is Domstein, a food industry company, that has chosen FSC-certified boxboard from Schur Pack and Cascades Djupafors for their frozen fish products. The new packaging suits the Norwegian-Swedish private label-supplier Domstein. The company is producing fish products for example Coop and the trademark Änglamark.

- In an early stage we chose to use MSC-certified fish. We are also part owners in a fishing fleet, which uses fishinghooks instead of trawls. For some time, we have been searching for an alternative regarding our packaging, that’s friendly for the environment. When Schur pack was able to offer FSC-certified packaging it felt completely right, says Ulrica Wahlund, sales manager at Domstein Sverige AB.

Together with the MSC-certification (Marine Stewardship Council), involving fishing that generates sustainable populations of fish, Domstein is now able to offer a solution that benefits the environment in all levels of their products.

According to Göran Johansson, sales manager at Schur Pack Sweden AB, we’re going to see a lot more environmentalcertified boxboard.

- I’m convinced that the demand for this type of products will increase even more, he says.

- Our mill woke up as a result of the consequences of the Storm Gudrun in year 2005. After it had passed, we began a much more intense work to adjust our operation with the intention to reduce our influence on the climate. Today, we’re probably one of the role models among the boxboard mills, with many projects connected to the environment. We have for instance begun the development of a new PE-free barrier boxboard, which we have a great trust in, says Björn Sandberg at Cascades Djupafors.
