Paper Profile

Smart solutions to global challenges

Paper Profile is a voluntary environmental product declaration scheme for paper products. The scheme is developed and provided by leading paper producers. It covers relevant environmental aspects related to paper production including product composition and emissions, wood procurement and environmental management.

The paper industry has a long tradition of open environmental reporting to national authorities and other stakeholders. In today’s increasingly internationalised paper market, this requires a uniform approach to reporting variables and measuring principles. To a large extent, these are also strictly regulated by national and international environmental bodies. Today the big environmental questions are global and deal with usage of resources and climate. They are significantly more difficult to handle compared to finding techniques for minimizing emissions from mills to air and water.

Paper Profile embraces the whole chain

Issued for individual products, the single-page declaration gives essential information regarding the composition of the product, key environmental parameters, environmental management and wood procurement. The certified environmental management systems used by participants in the Paper Profile programme are the ISO 14001 standard and/or the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), which is regulated by the European Union. Both systems cover organisational procedures, procurement, product development, production and distribution. They include both the current status and methods for continual improvement.

The key parameters that are declared in the Paper Profile primarily relate to the production of paper: Emissions to air and water, solid waste to landfill and the consumption of purchased electricity. The information provided in the single Paper Profile sheet is based on figures reported to authorities and on the participating companies’ continuous dialogue with customers, authorities and non-governmental organisations.

Facts about Paper Profile

  • Paper Profile is not suitable for comparing or ranking products directly. Different products have different environmental characteristics, depending on the production processes applied. Local environmental conditions of the production site are another important aspect to take into account.

SCA and Paper Profile

The figures presented in the Paper Profile orginates from our Resource Management System (RMS), which monitors the way SCA uses energy, water, transport and raw materials. It also describes the level of waste and emissions. The data is verified by an external auditor.
