SCA produces solid-wood shelving for IKEA

SCA Timber has taken a step into IKEA’s shelves in northern Europe with the solid-wood Gorm shelving unit. SCA’s partner in Kramfors, Sweden, TräTeam, is investing SEK 35 million in equipment for manufacturing and ten employees in two shifts will maintain the shelving production.

IKEA GormCompetitive production set-up

SCA Timber and subsupplier TräTeam have developed a production set-up that cuts costs in the chain from raw material to product in the stores and as a result is highly competitive:

The wood products of the right quality will be produced in the specific dimensions at SCA’s sawmills, primarily in Bollsta, but partly also in Munksund.
The dried products will be shipped from Bollsta in stacks to TräTeam in Kramfors, where they will be planed, scanned and then trimmed to finished shelving components.
In the next step in the production line, the components are nailed together into shelf segments.
Finally, the shelving components are fed to an advanced packaging machine where everything is packed into a flat carton with a bag of screws and instructions.
The shelving units are then distributed to IKEA stores in the Nordic region, Benelux and Germany. The first Gorm shelves will be delivered in less than a year.

About 45,000 cubic meters of pinewood per year will be required for production. Most will come from the Bollsta sawmill.

A step forward

“Through investments and product development, we have matured to this step forward in the value-adding chain,” says Katarina Levin, Manager of Bollsta sawmill.

“We have moved from sawing planks and boards to producing products for a specific purpose. Now we are all the way to finished products on the shelves of IKEA stores. It is highly pleasing and will hopefully carry us toward more stable profitability. There are not many sawmill companies that have the equipment, expertise and volume sufficient to be able to accept an undertaking of this magnitude.”
