On Earth Day, April 22, SCA Americas took many initiatives to increase environmental awareness. Amongst them were an earth-friendly superhero team handing out tree samplings, and sponsoring the World Is Green-exhibition for children.

More than one billion people worldwide celebrated Earth Day for the 39th consecutive year. “We had a great time celebrating Earth Day in the Americas. For the first time ever, we were able to coordinate our celebrations in the US, Canada and Mexico/Central America,” says Amy Bellcourt, Vice President Communications, SCA Americas.
Activities all over the Americas
Below you find a selection of SCA activities in the Americas during Earth Day. The numbers and the map to the right show where the event took place.
Americas: Sea of green
All employees of SCA Americas followed the invitation to wear green during the day.
Philadelphia, USA: Street teams
Four teams of volunteers handed out 2,500 reusable grocery bags to passers-by at four of the town’s busiest street corners.
Barton, USA: Earth-friendly superheroes
The Barton Recyclables – Paper Man, Cardboard Boy, Plastic Woman and Aluminium Girl - are earth-friendly superheroes. By day, they work at SCA. While wearing their super hero dresses, they gave tree samplings to colleagues. Moreover an environmental poster contest with nearly 700 submissions from local schools was held.
Bowling Green, USA: Tree planting
Tree planting, giveaway of free tree seedlings to employees, Earth Day colouring-, photo- and quiz contest were some of the highlights.
Mexico and Central America: Collective paper recycling
Employees cleaned work spaces and gathered together paper for recycling - a practice still not so common in the region.
Flagstaff, USA: 4,000 participants at community event
SCA provided napkins and dispensers for the community event in Flagstaff. SCA’s booth focused on public education about the Flagstaff Mill and the Bellemont Converting Facility.
Oakville, Canada: Green message
80% of the employees here work remotely, so biodegradable bags were sent to each employee with a note asking them to pick up trash in their community. Children participated in a drawing contest around environmental protection in the family.

Northeast region, USA: Children exhibition & Earth Day book
SCA Tissue sponsored “The World is Green”-exhibition at the World Awareness Children’s Museum focusing on Earth Day. In Glens Falls and Schylerviller employees visited elementary schools to read and to donate copies of the Earth Day book. Industry retirees toured the South Glens Falls plant to learn more about SCA’s sustainability work.
Drummondville, Canada: Reusing before recycling
SCAs team focused on the 3R: Reduce consumption; Reuse before recycling; Recycle instead of throwing away.
Midwest, USA: Water & recycling
Amongst the activities at The Service Excellence Center and plants in Wisconsin were an employee presentation on issues around water, a grounds clean-up at the Neenah Converting site, an electronics recycling event at the Menasha Mill and tree planting ceremonies at local schools during the following weeks.
