SCA will substantially raise the bar for climate work by committing to develop a science-based target for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The proposed target will be developed over the course of the year and submitted to approval organizations.

As previously communicated by SCA, the company has been part of an investigation by the Polish Anti-Trust Authority. The authority has now issued its decision and imposed a fine of approximately EUR 700k.

As previously communicated, Productos Familia S.A., Colombia, of which SCA owns 50% of the shares, is a part of an ongoing investigation by the Colombian competition authority. Familia has now been found guilty in an anti-trust inquiry related to baby diapers. The inquiry targeted Familia and three other companies in the market. Familia will be fined approximately SEK 97m.

1.3 million diapers and financial assistance to refugee children

SCA saves water in Lilla Edet
In the future, the tissue mill in Lilla Edet, Sweden, will use significantly less water in its production. With the help of an investment the water usage will be reduced by 30 percent, which is in line with the company’s goal to reach water sustainability.

Serious issues on World Toilet Day

SCA in Neuss heated without fossil fuels
The SCA plant in Neuss, Germany, has managed to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 1,275 tons a year by abandoning fossil fuels for all its heating and hot water production. Thereby, the facility has also decreased the total energy consumption by 2 percent. Part of this success can be explained by including employees in the project and using local skills.

French Red Cross and SCA in France renew their partnership in Lorient
SCA and the French Red Cross have had a partnership since 2011. The partnership involves distributing of hygiene kits to homeless people in France. During the stopover in Lorient, a renewal of the contract was signed for the coming three years and with that, about 600,000 more hygiene kits will have been distributed by 2017.

Milestones in SCAs water initiatives
At our Kunheim site in France, SCA is installing biological water treatment featuring a lagoon system that contains reeds. The plant is the first of its kind in France and, when operational in 2015, SCA will have achieved its Group water treatment target.
SCA and Vinda support hand hygiene program in China
SCA and Vinda will provide Tork and Vinda solutions to a 6-month hand hygiene program in Shenzhen, China. The program – which will cover 18 kindergartens and 2,200 households – is the first quantitative research in China to link early hand hygiene intervention with disease prevention.
Record number of participants at the Annual General Meeting

Libero’s prototype brings parents closer during pregnancy
SCA's baby brand Libero is now testing Baby Buzz – an innovative prototype giving parents the opportunity to share the pregnancy in a whole new way. Libero Baby Buzz is a bracelet for each of the parents, where the mother’s has a button so she can send a ‘buzz’ to the father’s when the baby is kicking. The aim is to minimize the emotional distance between parents during pregnancy.

For the eighth consecutive year, SCA has been recognized as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute. Only three companies in the Forestry, Paper and Packaging category were honored this year and SCA is one of them. SCA has appointed Linda Nyberg as Vice President Media Relations and Online Communications. Linda is one of Sweden’s leading journalists and communicators, with both national and international experience. She has formerly worked as a presenter and journalist at SVT, Al Jazeera, TV4, TV3 and has held the position of Vice President PR and Communications at the listed medical technology company Bactiguard.
SCA improved hygiene for over 6,000 households in Madagascar
Between 2010 and 2014, SCA has helped more than 6,000 households to get better access to clean water and hygiene facilities in Madagascar through a partnership with SOS Children’s Villages France. The partnership also included an education program focusing on the importance of good hygiene.
SCA and WSSCC continue to break taboos
SCA and WSSCC recently organized a menstrual hygiene training for some 30 young girls in Haikou, not far away from the Volvo Ocean Race stopover city Sanya, China. A group of women was also educated by WSSCC in a train-the-trainers session to continue to spread the knowledge around menstruation; in the long run necessary to achieve sustainable change.
SCA & WSSCC arrange hygiene seminar to raise awareness in China
On February 2, SCA, Vinda and Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) organized a Hygiene Matters seminar in Sanya, China aiming to raise awareness among decision makers, experts and the general public of the connection between hygiene, health and wellbeing. SCA invited nursing home executives from all of China to the seminar and to a best practice sharing sessions in the afternoon.
Andreas Fall awarded 2015 Alf de Ruvo Scholarship
The 2015 Alf de Ruvo scholarship, worth SEK 500,000, has been awarded to Dr. Andreas Fall for his comprehensive mapping of colloid chemistry interactions in nanocellulose systems, which may contribute to the development of entirely new materials.

Lifestyle, SCAs feminine care brand in South Africa, hosted an event in the SCA Pavilion in Cape Town in the beginning of November. On the theme 'Share your Dreams', a group of 15 teenage girls were invited to learn more about SCA, Team SCA and the importance of having strong, positive women role models.
SCA plants trees together with primary school in Cape Town
SCA has organized a tree planting activity with children at Mseki Primary School of Gugulethu near Cape Town. The activity, headed by Josephine Edwall-Björklund, SVP Communications, and joined by Team SCA sailors Elodie Mettraux and Dee Caffari, aims to create awareness about sustainability and the important role trees play for the environment.

On August 19 SCA’s forestry and versatility park was inaugurated in Sörgraninge, Sollefteå Municipality in Sweden. The new park offers a wide variety of natural habitats, including high-conservation-value forests and cultural relics from ancient times.

High level roundtable discussion
China's Deputy Health Minister Liu Qian visited Sweden this week to study the Swedish health care system. SCA was one of the companies that got the chance to meet with him and eight directorate directors during a roundtable at the government offices in Stockholm.
New wind farm inaugurated
Yesterday, the wind farm Mörttjärnberget was inaugurated in Northern Sweden. It is the second of totally six wind farms in SCA's major wind power venture in partnership with Norwegian energy company Statkraft.
TENA race: more than 7,000 people in Mexico run for incontinence awareness
The eighth edition of the TENA race was held recently in Mexico City, Mexico. This 5K run or 3K walk is one of Mexico’s biggest events to raise awareness and overcome barriers against incontinence. This year, a similar TENA race was also held for the first time in Costa Rica.
SCA donates hygiene products to flooded areas on the Balkan
Strong rain has caused extreme flooding on the Balkan. International Red Cross estimates that over one million people are affected and as many as 400,000 are homeless and evacuated. As a responsible and caring company SCA has immediately started to provide emergency relief in the form of much needed hygiene products.
SCA supports female farmer’s battle against desertification

60% purer water in SCA’s tissue mill in France
SCA’s tissue mill in Gien, France, has improved the quality of its production water by 60% thanks to a new biological water treatment station. The mill not only meets SCA’s objective to equip all manufacturing locations with biological water treatment before 2015, but also has cleaner water than required in forthcoming EU regulations. It’s so clean that is can be reused in production, replacing freshwater.

SCA and the Red Cross provide hygiene kits to homeless people in France
For the third year in a row, SCA and the French Red Cross work together to provide homeless people in France with hygiene kits. This year, more than 120 000 hygiene kits are being provided, which represents an increase of 20% compared with last year. By the end of 2014, over 260,000 SCA hygiene kits will have been distributed to homeless people since 2011.

SCA wins two innovation awards at North America’s largest cleaning industry trade show
SCA impressed customers and attendees at the recent ISSA Interclean trade show in Las Vegas, NV in the United States. The new Tork Xpress Countertop Towel Dispenser won the show’s top Innovation Award as well as the Visitor’s Choice Award.
Sustainability is at the core of SCA

Every day, 4.000 children die from a lack of proper sanitation. Hygiene helps to prevent many diseases. On World Toilet Day SCA in the Netherlands joined forces with Oxfam Novib to raise awareness.
SCA supports emergency relief in the Philippines
More than 11 million people are believed to have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan and survivors are in desperate need of food, water, medical care and shelter. SCA supports Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) emergency fund with a financial donation.

SCA is yet again recognized by World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) for leadership in transparency by disclosing its ecological footprint in the WWF Environmental Paper Company Index 2013 for its tissue operations.
Gains on two fronts from lower fuel consumption
Both the environment and the company’s economy have gained greatly from the hard work that SCA has done to reduce its RoRo vessels’ fuel consumption. The efforts have paid off and in 2013 SCA Logistics managed to reduce the fuel consumption by 3.4 percent compared to 2012. The reduction of environmental impact equals the electricity consumption of 1140 villas.
SCA saves water
Water matters. Every year millions of cubic meters of water pass through SCA’s paper mills around the world. Paper production requires a lot of water and SCA has established ambitious water targets to use it as intelligently and sustainably as possible – especially in water-stressed countries like Mexico, where water really matters.

New app from SCA teaches kids how to wash their hands
Kids in pre-school are curious and active and are constantly using their hands to explore their surroundings. A new international survey shows that three out of four parents believe that their family’s sick leave would decrease if there was better knowledge of hand hygiene at pre-schools.
SCA cuts annual energy costs by 2.7 million euro
By finding effective ways to reduce energy consumption SCAs company for solid-wood products SCA Timber saves over 2.7 million euros every year. The innovative thinking reduces energy consumption as well as makes less impact on the environment and contributes to a more sustainable society.
SCA once again recognized in Climate Disclosure Leadership Index
For the fourth time SCA has qualified for the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index, which represents 722 institutional investors with 87 trillion USD in assets under management, for its approach to climate change disclosure. The achievement is announced in the CDP Nordic 260 Climate Change Report 2013.
SCA Chairman in the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame
SCA chairman Sverker Martin-Löf has been recognized for outstanding leadership contributions to the paper industry. On October 3, he was inducted into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame.
First wind farm inaugurated
The first wind farm in SCA and Statkraft's big wind power investment was inaugurated on Thursday September 26. “It is one of the largest industrial projects in Sweden," said Jakob Norström, CEO of Statkraft SCA Vind AB.
Less emissions and great savings for SCA

SCA’s tissue mill in Ortmann, Austria, has found a way to recycle its waste material by turning it into pallets. The innovation is in its early development, but the potential is great as it is both environmentally friendly and economically efficient.
The first big test for Team SCA
Offshore racing is a true test of teamwork and physical and mental endurance. The biennial Rolex Fastnet Race, one of the most famous offshore races in the world which starts on Sunday 11 August, covers 608 miles (978 km) of ocean and will push even the most experienced sailors to their limit. A record 372 boats have entered this classic offshore race in 2013 – and for Team SCA this will be the first time that they compete in such a high-profile event as part of the preparation for a round-the-world race.

A different day working for SCA
When SCA decided to participate in Scandinavia’s biggest offshore sailing race they turned to their employees in search of crewmembers. Applications came from all over SCA and finally seventeen men and women from different areas of SCA were chosen. With backup from professional coaches they battled the Baltic Sea in a 600 kilometer race around the island of Gotland and back.
SCA inaugurates unique bio diversity park
SCA inaugurated its first Forestry and versatility park in Peltovaara, near the town of Gällivare in the north of Sweden on June 25. The park is part of a large forest area with a greater diversity than other forests. The initiative is part of SCA’s nature and environment work and the first in a series of parks to come.

SCA donated 4.000 trees to fight against desertification in China
SCA has – with the help from thousands of our Weibo- and Facebook followers – donated 4.000 trees to a female farmer in the Ningxia desert in China. The farmer shares SCA’s passion for sustainability, and has for over a decade worked hard to stop the desertification by turning the desert into a forest.

New product launched by SCA
Celeste Filter is a new kraft pulp product recently launched by SCA Forest Products’ Östrand pulp mill. It is more porous than other Celeste products and is therefore well suited for production of products such as oil and air filters. Celeste filter will be delivered to producers of base paper for filters and in the next step of the value chain the filter paper is converted to end products, such as oil filters for cars.

Ortviken paper mill tracks electricity price hour by hour
EARTH HOUR 2011 | The shift production engineer at SCA's Ortviken paper mill, Sweden, produces a forecast about the amount of electricity planned to be used so that the correct amount of electricity at the right price can be procured. To facilitate preparing the forecast, it is developed using a special computer program designed by Lars-Olof Ivarsson, production engineer on the fourth shift.
Tissue mill in the UK reduced energy consumption by 10 percent
EARTH HOUR 2011 | SCA's tissue mill in Trafford Park, UK, has reduced its energy consumption by 10 percent. The project, which is part of the ESAVE energy-savings program, provides an annual savings of EUR 600,000 and 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

200,000 Euro handed over to WaterAid for projects in Uganda

How do you value a tree?
SCA is the largest private owner of forests in Europe with 2.6 million hectares (6.4 million acres) of forestland. A hectare is 100 x 100 meters. A soccer field is 68 x 105 meters, which is 0.7 hectares (1.7 acres). So SCA owns forestland equal to about three million soccer fields.

Swine flu changes people’s behaviour and increases the demand for improved hygiene in public environments
SCA, the world’s third largest hygiene company, today launches Hygiene Matters 2010. This is an international report revealing that concern remains high that poor hygiene increases the risk of infection with, for example, swine flu. As many as seven in ten worry they will fall ill. Four in ten have changed their personal hygiene habits following the recent influenza scare out of fear of contracting the infection. Warm air dryers increase bacteria on hands
Warm air dryers cause an average increase in the number of bacteria on people’s hands by 254 percent as well as potential contamination of the washroom environment. Increased use of recovered paper in Laakirchen

Continued FSC certification for SCA
The outcome of the follow-up audit conducted in February by the certification firm SGS of SCA’s forestry operations, is that SCA will continue to be FSC certified. During an audit last autumn, SCA was cited for deficiencies in nature conservation, among other comments. A follow-up audit shows that these shortcomings are rectified or are in the process of being corrected.

Graningebruk sawmill completely burned down
At 5:30 a.m. the morning of 8 February, a fire broke out at SCA's sawmill in Graninge. When the fire services arrived at the scene, the building that housed the saw line was completely in flames. The damage was extensive.

The audit of SCA’s compliance with the Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) forestry standards also revealed shortcomings. Since then a detailed action program has been developed and launched to ensure that the mistakes made will not be repeated.
