History
Sorbent tissue products were launched in 1952 by the original owner of SCA’s Box Hill site, British Australian Paper Company (BAP), with the first press advertising commencing in 1954. Over the ensuing years Sorbent produced some of the most iconic and best-known advertising in Australia.
In 1959 building commenced on the new tissue plant at Box Hill, Victoria and in 1961 the first paper machine was commissioned. In 1962 facial tissues, napkins and paper towels were introduced to the Australian market. In addition, for the first time color was introduced to toilet tissue. In 1964 a second paper machine began operating at Box Hill and in 1970 a third was commissioned.
In 1978 the company (at that time Bowater-Scott) teamed with Molnlycke AB of Sweden to form Sancella Pty Limited to manufacture personal care products. A ‘greenfield’ manufacturing site was developed at Westall (now the SCA Springvale site). Personal care products from the new site launched under the Libra and Fleur brands.
In 1990 a fourth, state of the art paper machine was commissioned for the Box Hill manufacturing site.
In May 2004, SCA Group officially acquired the Australian operations as part of its establishment of SCA Hygiene Australasia.
In November 2011 SCA has decided to form a joint venture partnership for its existing operations in Australasia with the Australian company Pacific Equity Partners (PEP). SCA and PEP Fund IV will each hold 50% of the company.
