Certification

SCA consider certification of forest and production units as an important part of the environmental work. Trustworthy environmental certification systems increase the possibility to create a sustainable society.

ForestThe Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, international network which mission is to achieve environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically viable forestry worldwide. SCA is fully supportive of FSC's work to promote responsible forest management world-wide and considers FSC to be the most credible verifier of responsible forest management. WWF, for example, advises the international financial community to invest in forest products' companies which have obtained Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.

FSC-certified SCA units

SCA's Swedish forests were certified under the FSC scheme in January 1999. SCA has received FSC Chain-of-Custody certificates for all seven saw mills, the Östrand pulp mill and for the Ortviken paper mill. The production units use massaved or timber from FSC-certified forests.

SCA is granted the entitlement to issue FSC group certification. This enables the company to service private forest owners seeking FSC certification.

SCA is a global leader in FSC-certified products

SCA is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of FSC-certified products. The breadth of this portfolio, which includes solid-wood products, pulp, toilet paper, kitchen rolls, magazine paper and newsprint, is probably unequalled.

SCA is also unique by being able to offer large volumes of FSC-certified pulp and publication papers. The demand for FSC-certified paper products increases in Europe, especially in the UK and Germany.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC)

The PEFC Council is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third-party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

PEFC is a global umbrella organisation for the assessment of and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process. These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area.

PEFC-certified SCA units

SCA's Laakirchen paper mill, Austria, is certified according to PEFC. Through its chain-of-custody certificate, Laakirchen offers its customers PEFC-certified paper products.

ISO and EMAS - the following mills and units are certified

SCA uses ISO 14001 and EMAS (the EU's system for environmental management and auditing) as environmental management systems. All forestry operations and a large number of production units are certified according to ISO or/and EMAS. SCA will continue its program for the remaining mills and as further acquisitions are made.

SCA’s forestry operations and the following mills and units are certified in accordance with these systems.
