Forest-based biofuel

SCA is one of Europe’s largest suppliers of forest-based biofuel.

SCA supplies unrefined fuels such as logging slash (branches and tops from felling), bark, sawdust and peat as well as refined fuel such as pellets and briquettes.

SCA BioNorr is responsible for pellet production at plants in Härnösand and Stugun, Sweden. Customers are private households as well as large and medium-size heat and cogeneration (CHP) plants in Europe.

Market positions

SCA is a major player with years of experience on the market for unrefined biofuels. In northern Sweden, SCA’s market share is nearly 50%.

The demand for refined biofuel such as pellets is increasing by 20-25% annually. SCA BioNorr's production capacity of about 180,000 tons of pellets corresponds to approximately 10% of Sweden’s needs. The market leader produces 18%.

The demand for energy and the need to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels is resulting in strong political support for renewable energy. Accordingly, the market is projected to grow for both refined and unrefined biofuel, in Sweden as well as Europe. Conditions are favorable for SCA to grow as a supplier of forest-based biofuel.

Deliveries in 2007 amounted to more than 3 TWh.
