Tigers in Libero’s spring collection 2009

This spring Libero is launching its third edition of specially designed diapers. The spring collection was produced by New York-based illustrator Yuko Shimizu who was inspired by nature, and features tigers reminiscent of the tattooing arts of classical Japan.

This spring and summer, we’ll be seeing animal prints on clothing, accessories and home furnishings alike. This year, this perennial trend has also found its way into the world of diapers as millions of babies in the Nordic and Baltic regions will wear diapers with Yuko Shimizus dramatically illustrated tigers.

“I wanted to challenge the traditionally silly and brightly colored illustrations that are usually found on diapers and instead choose the tiger motif with details such as fire, rays of sunlight, and flowers. Children’s fantasies are often sparked by animals drawn in a powerful and grown-up way, and as parents, we should have greater faith in children’s unlimited joie de vivre.” says Yuko Shimizu, the illustrator behind Libero's Tiger Collection.

The “Tiger Collection” is printed on Libero’s Up&Go diapers and is sold in a limited edition during May and June. In total, 65 millions of tiger diapers will be out for sale during spring 2009 and each Tiger Collection consists of five different tiger patterns.

Yuko Shimizu – from  Rolling Stone Magazine to tiger diapers

Yuko Shimizu grew up in Japan and has been living and working as an illustrator in New York since 1999. Today she works for publications such as the New York Times, TIME and Rolling Stone Magazine. She has also produced illustrations for MTV, Visa and Microsoft, and won several international prizes.

According to Yuko, the biggest challenge in designing diapers was breaking away from traditional diaper patterns with sometimes overly playful and colourful illustrations. Instead, Yuko chose to adorn the new collection with dramatic tigers brushed in a classic Yuko manner. Her approach was inspired by the classical tattooing arts of Japan.

The “Tiger Collection” is Libero’s third edition of specially designed diapers. Libero chose Yuko Shimizu for her classical Japanese style and powerful, dramatic visual language. The collection was inspired by nature and through the powerful movements of the tigers, symbolizes the energy inherent in children. Yuko Shimizu regularly works as an illustrator in New York for publications such as the New York Times, TIME and Rolling Stone Magazine.
