SCA Packaging challenges European design students

In 2008 SCA Packaging Europe challenged European design students and non-professional packaging designers to come up with a proposal for an innovative and sustainable total packaging concept for selling chocolate.

Hundreds of students from more than 20 European countries took the challenge and out of 90 concepts, five finalists have been chosen by a qualified jury to compete for the main prize.

Customers to SCA Packaging could also vote for their preferred concept on the ‘Customer Cup’ category. In addition, starting this week and until 15th March, all visitors to www.scapackaging.com can choose their preferred design for the ‘Public Vote’ category. Everybody is welcome to rate one or several of the 90 submissions. To be able to vote you need to obtain your username and password on the Design Challenge website designchallenge.scapackaging.com

The finalists chosen by the jury for the main prize are Disco Choco by Natacha Lesty from the Ecole Internationale de Design (France), Sweet Notes by Miriam Liebana from the UPC (Spain), Chic by Florin Alexa-Morcov (Romania), Pop Your Flavour by Jorg Rijkschroeff and Ralf de Bruin from the Hogeschool Arnhem Nijmegen (Netherlands) and Six Square by Kajsa Ericsson and Ylva Söderström from the Lund University (Sweden).

These are the five finalists:

Disco ChocoDisco Choco: The concept focuses on the theme 'disco': sharing pleasant moments, brilliant colours, music...
Sweet NotesSweet Notes: This concept focuses on the link between chocolate and human relations. The interactive packaging allows for the consumer to write a small message, depending on the mood they are in.
ChicChic: This concept is built arund the premise of making your own chocolate at home. It consists of different varieties of cocoa powder and cocoa butter that can be mixed and matched together, allowing the consumer to create his or her own favourite chocolate flavour.
Pop Your Flavour Pop Your Flavour: The pack is divided in sections that each contain a portion of chocolate, so that it doesn't need to be re-closed.
Six Square: This concept offers the consumer the chance to eat only one small piece of chocolate at a time. The concept is iconic and decorative and maximises the use of space.

The winner will be announced during the ‘Packaging Experience’ event in Brussels on 23 March. First price is EUR 3,000 and an internship at the SCA Packaging Innovation Centre in Brussels or Design Centres across Europe. For places 2 to 5 the price sum is EUR 1,000.
