UK tissue mill wins environmental management award

SCA Tissue Europe’s consumer tissue mill in Prudhoe, UK, has been awarded for its outstanding performance in environmental management.

It was the Journal & Evening Gazette North East Business Awards in association with Business Link that choose the winners in the North East UK region.

The purpose of the competition was to ‘recognise outstanding performance in environmental management’ among more than 320 local companies that entered the awards competition.

“I would like to congratulate Prudhoe mill on its achievements and for winning such a prestigious but richly deserved award. It’s thanks to the hard work of the Prudhoe mill teams and their continual environmental improvements, that the mill entered – and triumphed – in the Environmental Management section of the awards,” says Stewart Begg,  Environmental Manager UK within SCA Tissue Europe.

The judges of the competition awarded SCA merit for:

  • Minimising the environmental impact of their operations through a reduction in emissions (liquid, solid and gas).
  • Reducing the long-term environmental impact of the product through design, innovation and manufacturing techniques.
  • Re-use and recycling initiatives of waste and raw materials including supply chain initiatives and waste exchange.
  • Initiatives in partnership with the local community, including education either at community or company level.
  • Contribution to the overall well-being of the community, its environment and general quality of life.
  • Environmental projects which contribute to the economic regeneration of the region.
  • Projects that can demonstrate long-term sustainability or improvements to bio diversity.

Facts and figures about the Prudhoe mill

  • The mill was bought by SCA from Kimberly-Clark in 1997
  • It employs approximately 400 people and produces 110,000 tonnes consumer tissue per year.
  • Main products are Velvet toilet tissue, Quilted Velvet toilet tissue, and Asda shades private label toilet tissue.
