SCA Transforest switches to “green” diesel

All diesel-driven forklifts, loaders, cranes and trucks at SCA Transforest’s harbour terminal operations in Sweden will switch to more environmental-friendly synthetic diesel. All SCA transports to and from the industrial operations conducted in Sundsvall and at Tunadal Harbour will be fuelled by this synthetic diesel.

Bottle containing paradiesel (synthetic diesel)SCA has entered into a two-year agreement with the diesel supplier FramTidsbränslen AB, under which the company will purchase approximately 3.3 million litres of synthetic diesel, also known as Paradiesel, making SCA one of Europe’s largest users of synthetic diesel.

Each year, SCA has approximately 40,000 transports in the Sundsvall region between its industrial operations in Ortviken and Östrand and the harbour at Tunadal. By switching to more environment-friendly fuel, SCA will reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide by 10% from these transports or by more than 400 tons annually.

The switch from regular diesel to Paradiesel will have several positive effects on the environment. Primarily, it will reduce all emissions compared with regular diesel. It will mainly reduce emissions of particles and other health-hazardous substances, by approximately one third or more. It will also reduce emissions of carbon dioxide by 10 per cent from these transports (more than 400 tons annually).

“By switching fuel, we naturally aim to reduce our environmental load, as well as our emissions from the terminals and along roads, thus benefiting employees and local residents alike. The switch may also be viewed as a step towards achieving our goal of reducing our carbon dioxide emissions, in accordance with SCA’s overall environmental objectives,” says Magnus Svensson, President of SCA Transforest.

“Customers and users of SCA’s products are also increasingly demanding that our products not only arrive in an undamaged condition and at the right time but that the products are also free from dust and other particles. This applies primarily to products for various food, hygiene-products and medical companies.”
